What is Screwless Terminal Block

Screwless terminal blocks significantly reduce wiring and installation time due to the fact that no specialist tools are required. They also solve the issue of installing intricate and hard-to-reach systems.

Screwless terminal blocks connect multiple wires by pressing a lever whilst still providing a reliable and safe connection. This means that they can better withstand the vibration caused in transport applications, without the need for re-tightening.

Benefits of Screwless Terminal Block

One of the key benefits of screwless terminal blocks is that they provide a safer and more secure connection compared to other electrical components. Terminal blocks are designed to prevent electrical arcing and short circuits, reducing the risk of electrical fires and other safety hazards. They also provide insulation between different electrical circuits, reducing the risk of electrical shock and other safety hazards.

In addition to safety benefits, terminal blocks are also essential for improving the efficiency of electrical systems. They allow for easy and convenient connection and disconnection of electrical devices, making it simple to reconfigure electrical systems or make repairs. Terminal blocks are also designed to minimize electrical resistance, reducing energy losses and increasing the efficiency of electrical systems.

Principle of Screwless Terminal Block

Screwless terminal block spring

The springs set into screwless terminal blocks are often made of stainless steel, and the conductive parts are electrolytic copper or tin plated, making them as durable as or more durable than screw-type terminal blocks over long periods of use. The clamping force of screwless terminal blocks is based on spring force, so they do not require periodic retightening as screw-type terminal blocks do.

The spring force set inside the terminal block secures the wire, and the larger the diameter of the wire, the stronger the clamping force. Therefore, even when using cables of different diameters on the same terminal block, the wire is not easily loosened and can be secured without damaging the wire.

Screwless terminal block fixing method

To secure a wire that has been stripped of its sheath, use a flat-blade screwdriver or a dedicated knob to reduce the force exerted by the spring to hold the wire in place, and insert the wire all the way to the back of the connection port. When removing an electric wire, use a flat-blade screwdriver or a dedicated knob to weaken the spring-loaded restraining force and pull the wire out of the connection port.

The History of Screwless Terminal Block

Screwless PCB mounted and Pluggable terminal blocks have been available for several years, however they’ve often required specialist tooling or at least a simple tool, such as a screwdriver, to open up the cage clamp prior to inserting the conductor.

Whilst this means the internal contacts are always closed and makes for a very reliable connection, it does somewhat slow down the installation and is not as user friendly as some terminals found within the electrical installation world (Such as Wago installation terminals). Since the creation of the lever installation block, the market has boomed and most electricians rely upon them everyday.

One of the main reasons electricians quickly adopted screwless terminals was the speed of installation. Within a split second you can safely and securely open up a lever terminal with just your finger, insert a pre-stripped conductor and terminate by closing the lever on the connector.

Precautions for using Screwless Terminal Block

Check the product specifications before use.

Use the appropriate product mounting method (ensuring insulation distance), connecting wires, and copper foil pattern of printed circuit in accordance with the working voltage and current.

The rated current represents the maximum current that one pole can carry. When a product allows the connection of two or more wires to one pole, make sure that the total current does not exceed the rated current.

Note that only copper wires can be used as connecting wires.

When connecting and disconnecting wires, make sure that the power is off.

Do not insert or connect any electric wires that fall outside the range of applicable wires.

When stripping off a wire sheath, check the strip-off length specified for each product. When a product has a strip gauge, use the strip gauge.

Connect only one wire per slot. Connecting two or more wires to one slot may cause a malfunction.

When connecting or disconnecting a wire, press and hold the button at the lower limit (press it in and hold it). There are some products that do not require the button operation when connecting a solid wire.

The number of wire connections of some terminal blocks is limited depending on the number of button operations; be sure to check the number before use in consideration of the operation frequency.

Before inserting or removing a plug from a receptacle of a connector-type product, make sure that no load is applied (the power is off).

Using too much flux before soldering may cause the flux to get into the connection part, which may lead to connection failures. Use an appropriate amount of flux.

Note that products cannot be used in the following places: hot or cold places; moist places; places where condensation or freezing occurs; places exposed to direct sunlight; places subject to vibration and impacts; dusty places; places exposed to water, various types of oils, chemicals (including detergent), corrosive gases, etc.

Note that as a general rule products are not washable.

The product specifications show the diameters and cross-sectional areas of wires. When there is a disparity between the value in mm2 and that in AWG, apply the value in mm2.

The terminal blocks are for indoor equipment. Do not use them for outdoor purposes.

When inserting or removing a plug from a receptacle of a connector-type product, keep it straight without twisting it.

Solderability depends on actual conditions, such as equipment and printed circuit board on which the product is to be mounted, including flux creep-up. Be sure to check after the product is mounted on the equipment.

Note that products certified to overseas standards are subject to restrictions on specifications according to each overseas standard.

When fixing a connecting wire, make sure there is no tension on the connected wire.

When mounting the product, do not apply excessive tightening torque exceeding the specified tightening torque.

When connecting or disconnecting electric wires, be careful not to apply more load than necessary. Especially when handling terminal blocks for printed circuit boards, take care not to apply load to the PC terminals when mounting and operating the product.

Do not disassemble or reassemble coupled products as doing so may cause quality problems to occur.

The actual size of some coupled products may be smaller than the total length obtained by calculations and the pitch between mounting holes on the board. When mounting such a product on actual equipment, stretch it slightly in the pitch direction so that it is aligned with the holes.

The white adherents on buttons are accumulations of fluororesin applied to the buttons to make the operation of the buttons smoother. There is no quality issue with the product.

Do not use soldered stranded wires, or connection failures may occur.
